Have a plumbing emergency? We’re available 24/7.
We do bathroom plumbing across Cairns and the northern beaches, from a straight swap where everything stays where it is, through to a full strip-out with the layout changing and every fixture moving.
Where you need a builder, we can point you at the ones we trust. On a bathroom the plumbing is the trade that has to be right before anything gets covered up, because everything that goes on afterwards is sitting on top of it.
The pipework that ends up inside the walls and under the floor, set out before the linings go back on. Hot and cold lines to every outlet, waste and drainage for the shower, bath, basin and toilet, and the in-wall bodies for mixers and shower sets. Everything gets set to the heights and positions your fixtures need, then pressure tested before it’s closed up, because once the wall lining and the tiles are on, changing any of it means taking them off again.
The visible half, done once the waterproofing, tiling and cabinetry are finished. Tapware, mixers, shower rails and heads, the toilet suite, basin and bath wastes, and the seals and connections behind them. We commission everything, check for leaks under pressure, and make sure the fall on the shower waste is doing what it should before you use the room.
Shifting the shower to the other wall, turning a bath space into a walk-in shower, moving the toilet, or putting the vanity where the window used to be. Each of these is a different job depending on what’s under the floor. We’ll come and look at what’s there and let you know which parts of your plan are likely to be simple and which are more complex, then quote it on that.
Once the linings come off, the existing pipework is visible for the first time since the house was built, and on an older bathroom that’s often galvanised or early copper that nobody has laid eyes on in decades. We’ll show you what’s there and what condition it’s in while it’s open and easy to see, and you can decide what you want done about it before it gets closed up again.
A renovation is often the point where the hot water system gets looked at, either because it’s old, because the new bathroom is going to ask more of it, or because the unit is in the way of what you’re building. We service and replace hot water systems and we’ve got licensed gas fitters on the team, so a gas hot water unit or a gas line stays with us and doesn’t need a third trade brought in.
A bathroom packs water, waste, waterproofing, tiling and power into one small room, and because each of those is separately licensed work, finishing one takes more trades than the size of the room suggests.
The builder takes out or moves walls, deals with anything structural, handles the floor and wall linings, and runs the job and the trades in it. Where the room is changing shape, this is the builder’s work.
The plumber does the water supply, the waste and drainage, the fixture set-outs, the rough-in and the fit-off, and any gas. Plumbing and drainage is licensed work in Queensland at any value, so it goes to a licensed plumber whatever else you take on yourself.
The water proofer puts the membrane through the wet area before the tiles go on. It’s a separate QBCC license to plumbing and to building, and it’s the layer everything else in the room depends on.
The tiler comes in once the waterproofing has cured, and the tiles set the finished floor and wall heights that the fit-off relies on.
The electrician does the lighting, the exhaust fan, the heat lamps, the shaver point and the underfloor heating if you’re putting it in.
Province Plumbing are the plumbers. If you don’t have the rest of that list yet, tell us what you’re planning and we’ll point you at the builders, waterproofers and tilers we work with around Cairns.
Send us your renovation plans and a photo of the bathroom and we’ll book in a time to look at it and quote the plumbing.
Managing your own bathroom means booking several trades in the right order and having the right things on site before each one turns up.
Bathroom plumbing is notifiable work in Queensland, which means we register it with the QBCC after it’s done and send you a copy of the Form 4 compliance certificate. Keep it with the paperwork for the house. It’s the record that the plumbing in your bathroom was done by a licensed plumber and registered properly, and it’s the thing a buyer, a building inspector or an insurer will ask about years from now.
Demolition first, then plumbing rough-in, then electrical rough-in, then the wall and floor linings, then waterproofing, then tiling, then plumbing fit-off, then the electrical fit-off at the end. The two plumbing visits sit at opposite ends of the job with most of the renovation in between them, so we’re booked twice, and the gap between the two is set by how long the waterproofing and tiling take.
Your tapware and shower fittings need to be bought and on site by the time we start the rough-in. Mixers and shower sets have a body that goes inside the wall, and its depth and its outlet positions are decided by the brand and model you’ve chosen, so we can’t set the wall out until we’ve got them in front of us. Along with that we need the final positions for the shower, bath, basin and toilet, the vanity you’ve picked, and the finished floor and tile heights from your tiler, because those set every waste and outlet in the room.
We sub-contract plumbing on bathroom renovations for builders across Cairns and the northern beaches, and we already work this way with several local builders.
You get a plumber who works to your set-out and your program, and gets off site so the linings can go on. If something in the plan doesn’t work once the floor is open, you’ll get a call while there’s still time to do something about it.
01.
You talk to a plumber, who will ask what you’re planning and work out what the job involves.
02.
We come and see the room, confirm what’s possible where, and give you a quote before we start the work. There’s no call-out fee between 7am and 5pm, Monday to Friday.
03.
Rough-in first, pressure tested and signed off before anything gets covered. Then we’re back for the fit-off once the waterproofing and tiling are done. We work to your builder’s program, or around your other trades if you’re running it yourself.
04.
Before we leave your property, you’ll know what we’ve done and you’ll get your Form 4 compliance certificate for the plumbing.
We only recommend work that genuinely needs doing, and our team follow this standard on every job.
Province Plumbing is available for Bathroom renovations all throughout Cairns and the Northern Beaches. Whoever turns up to your place works to the same standard, and we’re a member of the Master Plumbers’ Association of Queensland, which sets the code of conduct we are held to.
We work alongside builders, tilers and waterproofers on renovations around Cairns, so we can tell you early where your plan needs a trade we don’t cover.
Tell us what you’re planning and we’ll come and look at the room. Free quotes, and no call-out fee between 7am and 5pm on weekdays.
It depends on whether the room is changing shape. If the walls are staying where they are and you’re replacing what’s in the room, you may only need the trades themselves. Once a wall is coming out, a window is moving, or you’re borrowing space from the room next door, that’s structural and it’s builder’s work. The other thing that pushes people toward a builder is not wanting to be the one booking five trades in sequence and carrying it when one of them runs late.
Rough-in is the pipework that ends up hidden, set out and pressure tested before the walls and floor are closed up. Fit-off is the tapware, toilet and wastes going on at the end once the tiling is finished. They’re separate visits with the rest of the renovation sitting between them, which is why a plumber quoting your bathroom is quoting two trips to your house.
Usually, and how hard it is comes down to what’s under the floor. Moving a shower or a basin is a waste and water job and there’s normally a way to get there. Moving a toilet is the bigger one, because a pan needs enough fall to the sewer and the distance and direction it can travel is set by where the existing drainage runs. A house on stumps gives us access from underneath to work with. A slab means cutting into concrete to change a drain line. Ask us where the drainage runs before you settle on a layout.
Before rough-in, even though they’re the last thing that goes on. Mixers and shower sets have a body that sits inside the wall and every brand sets it out slightly differently, so we can’t set the wall out until we know exactly which one you’ve bought. Where tapware gets chosen after the walls are closed up, the work to change it comes out of the renovation’s time and budget.
Either way works. Plenty of people enjoy choosing their own tapware and want to buy it themselves, and if you don’t want to deal with it, tell us the look you’re after and we’ll sort it out as part of the job. What we will do either way is check that what you’ve chosen suits the water pressure and the space before it gets installed.
Because the same-sized bathroom can be two completely different jobs. Whether the fixtures stay put or move, what the existing pipework is made of and what state it’s in, whether the floor is a slab or timber, how much room there is to work in, and whether there’s gas involved all change the work substantially. We’ll come and look at the room first and give you a number we can stand behind.
Each of the two visits usually takes days, but they’re separated by the waterproofing and the tiling, so the plumbing is spread across the length of the whole renovation. If you’re running the job yourself, book both visits with us up front, so the fit-off is locked in before the tiler finishes.
Yes, and a lot of our renovation work comes to us that way. Your builder gives us the set-out and the program, we work to it, and we deal with them on scheduling so it isn’t on you. If you want to check us out first, ask your builder whether they’ve used us before, because there’s a fair chance they have.
